5 Simple Ways to Improve Your Home Security
Small security improvements can make a meaningful difference.
Home security does not always require expensive equipment. Start with the basics and make sure the physical locks and doors are doing their job.
1. Check exterior door locks
Loose, damaged or worn hardware should be repaired before it fails.
2. Rekey after moving
If you do not know who still has copies of old keys, rekeying can make the previous keys stop working.
3. Use a quality deadbolt
A properly installed deadbolt adds another layer of physical security to an exterior door.
4. Do not hide spare keys in obvious places
Under a mat, planter or nearby decoration is usually the first place someone will check.
5. Fix door alignment problems
A lock cannot work correctly if the door or strike plate is badly misaligned.
