Rekeying vs. Replacing Locks: What's the Difference?

Both options change access, but they solve different problems.

Rekeying changes the internal keying of a compatible lock so the old key no longer works. Replacing means installing new lock hardware.

When rekeying makes sense

  • You moved into a property and want old keys disabled.
  • A key was lost but the lock hardware is still in good condition.
  • You want several compatible locks to use a new key.

When replacement makes sense

  • The lock is damaged or heavily worn.
  • You want different hardware, a new style or a smart lock.
  • The existing lock is not suitable for the security need.

Ask before authorizing work

A locksmith should be able to explain why rekeying or replacement is recommended for the specific hardware.
