Rekeying vs. Replacing Locks: What's the Difference?
Both options change access, but they solve different problems.
Rekeying changes the internal keying of a compatible lock so the old key no longer works. Replacing means installing new lock hardware.
When rekeying makes sense
- You moved into a property and want old keys disabled.
- A key was lost but the lock hardware is still in good condition.
- You want several compatible locks to use a new key.
When replacement makes sense
- The lock is damaged or heavily worn.
- You want different hardware, a new style or a smart lock.
- The existing lock is not suitable for the security need.
Ask before authorizing work
A locksmith should be able to explain why rekeying or replacement is recommended for the specific hardware.
